News and Information
  • Keep working hard to meet the Reading Challenge, it is due DECEMBER 16th!!
  • The 1st Grade Christmas Program will be held on Monday, December 12th at 7 pm in the HS Auditorium.  If you haven’t signed and returned the permission slip, please do so.
  • Next week we are starting our 12 days of kindness. Each day will be different. On Wednesday, we are asking that each student donate a quarter, so we can buy a treat for someone special at the school. If you can participate we need it by Tuesday.
Language Workshop
This week we started looking at text features of non-fiction books.  We found table of contents, headings, bold print and a glossary.  We have discussed how we use them and then practiced. We also started a unit of Force and Motion.
Math Workshop
We assessed Topic 5 “Addition Facts to 20.” We have practiced solving doubles and near doubles up to 20. We are practicing our doubles facts so that we can solve math problems quickly. We are also learning to take our number sentences and make 10 in order to solve math problems faster. You can practice these facts at home to build that fluency.
Writing Workshop
This week we introduced narrative writing and discussed telling your story.
Word Study
We introduced silent “e” or  MAGIC “e” words.  We will continue these next week. Our words are: made, same, came, white, shake
hide, cube, note, rode, plate


Next Week
Next week we start our winter NWEA testing. We will continue assessing each student’s current reading level and continue Force and Motion. In math, we will start a unit on graphs.

Cox Care Mobile

The Cox Care Mobile is scheduled to be at Clever Schools on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Your child can be seen for FREE whether you have insurance or not. Services are available for children ages birth to eighteen years. You may call the school nurse to inquire about the services provided, to schedule an appointment, or to receive the necessary paperwork. Thank you!

  • Our new character word for November is Citizenship!
  • The 1st Grade Christmas Program will be held on Monday, December 12 at 7 pm in the HS Auditorium.  A permission slip is coming home today.  Please sign and return as soon as possible.
Language Workshop
This week we read and compared the classic version of Jack and the Beanstalk with a new version called Trust Me, Jack’s Beanstalk Stinks! We used these stories to describe how characters look and act. We assessed on the similarities and differences between these two stories by having students complete a Venn diagram. We started learning about verbs being action words. We practiced finding verbs in our reading and played verb charades.
Math Workshop
We reviewed Topic 4 “Addition and Subtraction Facts to 12” on Monday and tested on Tuesday.  Then we started Topic 5 “Addition Facts to 20.” We have practiced solving doubles and near doubles up to 20. We are practicing our doubles facts so that we can solve math problems quickly. You can practice these facts at home to build that fluency.
Writing Workshop
This week we learned about bold beginnings and excellent endings. Our bold beginnings included using a question, a strong feeling or noise, and a setting. The excellent endings included a feeling, a wish/hope, and a question.
Word Study
Next week we will be reviewing short and long vowel sounds. We will assess on this at the end of the week.

**We will continue to include a sentence every week.  Students will be expected to spell all word wall words correctly and use correct capitalization, punctuation.
Next Week
Next week we will be reading some Thanksgiving books. We will continue our learning with verbs and review nouns and pronouns. In writing, we will practice using bold beginnings and excellent endings. In math we will continue with Topic 5.

Care Packages for Our Troops

FBLA would like to thank the students for raising approximately $500 towards care packages for our troops.  The army men are being displayed throughout the building and will go home on Friday, November 18th.

Flu vaccines are available on the Cox Care Mobile for students that do not have insurance or for students that have active Medicaid.  The Care Mobile will be here next week on November 9th.  Call your school nurse to schedule an appointment.

News and Information
  • Don’t forget to work on the Reading Challenge. There are lots of activities to do during this time of year.
  • We are practicing our Reader’s Theatre in class. We will perform for each other next Friday.
  • Please send in any empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls and cotton balls for a project that we will doing next week. Thanks
Language Workshop
This week we read and compared the classic version of The Princess and the Pea with a new version called The Princess and the Pizza. We assessed on the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the stories. We continued looking for pronouns which replace nouns. We practiced using pronouns and finding them in our reading and then took an assessment.
Math Workshop
We finished Topic 4 “Addition and Subtraction Facts to 12” this week.  We practiced using a ten frame to help us add, drawing pictures to solve problems, and using addition to help us solve subtraction. Remember, addition/subtraction flash cards are a great way to help your child build fluency with these facts.  You can usually find these at the dollar stores!  
Writing Workshop
This week we practiced using the writing process. We finished using the writing process this week to publish a piece about our Halloween party.
Word Study
Our words for next week will be:
